A BLAZE at a Barrow golf course was the 'latest in a spate of nuisance fires', a crew has said.

The team at Walney Fire Station attended the fire in the open at Furness Golf Club, Walney at around 1.45am this morning.

A station spokesman said: "Approximately 50 metres squared of grass and gorse was well alight on arrival.

"The crew worked hard for around an hour to extinguish the fire using beaters and a hose reel.

"This is the latest in a spate of nuisance fires that tie up resources which may be needed elsewhere."

Walney Fire Station has been called out to eight fires in the open already this month.
