The arrival of Burger King to Barrow has been long awaited – and with just days until they are serving up meals to the general public The Mail took a sneak peek inside.

The newly-initiated crew have been firing up the grills and honing their Whopper-creating skills while feeding members of the community for free.

Free meal vouchers were given to groups such as Barrow AFC, Barrow Raiders, The Mail and the NHS to hand out to lucky recipients who got to have the first taste of the famous burgers, onion rings and fries.

Now the team are almost ready to welcome the general public, opening the drive-thru to everyone from Monday.

Area manager Georgina McCann previously worked at Burger King for more than 15 years in Wigan and has been in her current role for 18 months. Excited about the opening of the new store, she said: “It is going really well, everyone has been lovely with us and really welcoming and friendly. We are just excited, and we are shocked by the excitement in the community.

“The team have been so good. They are one of the best teams we have recruited in a long time. They have taken to it really well.

“They are doing really well and I am really proud of them.

“We’ve just been really positive. It’s been a dream – it has been one of the best openings so far.

“We are just raring to go.”

Initially a team of 25 were recruited to man the store, but after realising how busy it would become with the buzz of the 'King' arriving in the community, the team was expanded to 36.

The firm was not short of applicants, freezing recruitment after just three days when it became inundated with hundreds of applications.

While the store will initially open as a drive-thru, the fast-food giant can be found on Just Eat and Uber Eats from March 22 and will invite diners inside the store in-line with Government guidance in May.

The Barrow store is also one of 25 Burger King stores in the UK to be chosen for the Government's Kickstart scheme, meaning that the store will be recruiting two extra workers between the age of 18-24 on Universal Credit to train up with lifelong skills.

If you’re eager to get your hands on a Whopper, frozen Fanta and Coke, or any of the other items on the menu, the restaurant will be open from 11am on Monday.
