THE Mail’s readers have reacted strongly after concerns were raised about litter on Biggar Bank.

Walney residents have complained that the tourist hotspot is turning into a ‘rubbish tip’ after bins were spotted overflowing with waste.

Resident Alan Clark said: “Once again Biggar Bank is looking like a rubbish tip. For a local centre of attraction and with people using Biggar Bank more due to Covid restrictions it’s not acceptable that the facilities and cleaning are not to the standard expected by the residents and community using the area.

Councillor Ann Thomson, Barrow Borough Council leader and the lead member for greener and cleaner neighbourhoods, said: “We recognise there has been an increase of waste in the area and we believe this is because people are taking advantage of our beautiful coast line for their daily exercise during this national lockdown. Our team carries out regular patrols of the area so that we can tackle any accumulating waste as quickly as possible.”

One reader, Linda Hall, is calling for more regular waste removals from the council.

She said: “If the council recognise that there has been an increase in visitors because of lockdown and the weather, why haven’t they increased the regularity of emptying the bins? And if there are regular patrols of the area to tackle accumulating waste then why are the bins overflowing and blighting our beautiful coastline?”

However, Jo Day believes the current spate is due to a lack of personal responsibility.

She argued: “If people see an overflowing bin then take your rubbish home with you or find another bin. More bins, more money being taken away from other services and facilities.

"People need to start taking responsibility themselves for looking after the place – we’re in this together.”

Stu Merchant added: “We do need more bins and they need emptying more frequently but it’s obviously the people doing it at fault. If the bin is full, you take your rubbish home, it’s simple.”
