A COUNCILLOR has expressed his concern after youths were spotted giving abuse to drivers on a busy Walney road.

Members of the public spotted the group of teenagers hurling abuse and messing around in the road in the Mill Lane area, close to Walney Fire Station and the skatepark.

Police were called to Mill Lane at 6.30pm on Sunday after it was reported to them that youths were committing a road traffic offence and swearing at motorists.

It was also reported that the group of teenagers were seen putting traffic cones in the road.

Officers attended but were unable to locate any of the youths.

Concerned for the safety of those on the island, North Walney councillor Des Barlow is urging the youngsters to think twice before someone gets hurt.

He said: “They should not be doing things like that, it is causing problems not just for motorists but for pedestrians as well. Anyone could be walking alongside the road and when traffic is affected, anything could happen.

“It seems as though there are quite a few things going on locally, not just Walney but other parts of Barrow as well.”

The councillor alluded to the lengthy lockdown being one potential reason why the group of teens were causing trouble on the street.

“This pandemic has been going on for nearly a year now and I think that people want to get out down to the beach or just get out, it is like an escape for them – but they should not be doing that,” said Mr Barlow. “It could cause a serious problem if cars have to manoeuvre around cones. Anybody doing this is going to cause serious issues and they do not know what the consequences will be.”

Mr Barlow is also concerned for the safety of the teenagers messing about on a busy road.

He said: “Even from their safety point of view, doing things like this could affect them too. They could easily be hit by a car, especially on Mill Lane. Mill Lane is quite busy.”

Those who witness anti-social behaviour should call Cumbria police on101.
