CALLS have been made to support Barrow Market after an ‘incredibly difficult year’ for traders.

The public is being urged to support local, independent businesses once shops are permitted to reopen on Monday April 12.

Jacqui Armstrong, Barrow Market administration assistant, said traders have ‘taken the brunt’ of lockdown and she hopes shoppers will support them.

She said: “We were really pleased to hear the positive news on Monday that non-essential businesses are going to reopen on April 12.

“We have been working behind the scenes, preparing the market for when our traders and customers return. We’ve spruced up the stalls, deep cleaned and had a general all-round tidy-up.

“We will be liaising closely with our health and safety adviser to ensure the market remains Covid-secure. Our traders are stocking up with some exciting new lines and there’s some positive changes too. We have missed the hustle and bustle of the market hall and our customers have missed the sociable atmosphere of the market but we are looking forward to welcoming everyone back in April.

“We hope our community will come and visit us and support our local independent businesses.

“They have taken the brunt of the effects of lockdown and it’s been an incredibly difficult year for our traders.

“They’ve remained positive and focused on their businesses through their ordering and delivery services. Please support our market hall traders, we’re so fortunate to have one of the largest indoor markets in Cumbria.”
