A TAKEAWAY delivery driver has been banned from the road after he was caught drink driving by police in a supermarket car park.

Veselin Muhtarov was found to have been nearly three times over the alcohol limit after he was arrested by police at Tesco in Barrow's Hindpool Road.

At South Cumbria Magistrates' Court the 32-year-old, of Ainslie Street in Barrow, was given a hefty ban from getting behind the wheel.

Police reported he had a 'glazed look' in his eyes when they found him in his Ford Mondeo in the car park.

Prosecutor Rachel Dixon told the court the incident happened in the early hours of January 28.

"A member of staff contacted police with concerns about the defendant," she said.

"Police attended the car park. He has presented himself with slurred speech and a glazed look in his eye."

The court heard Muhtarov had 104 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when tested by police. The legal limit is 35.

Asked if he anything to say about the incident, Muhtarov said: "There's no excuse."

He told the court he was a takeaway deliver partner and would have no other employment after the ban.

He asked magistrates to consider a ban of only 12 months but was told the reading was too high.

Chair of the bench Robert Maddock said: "You were not just drunk you were really very drunk.

"You were drunk enough that people in Tesco saw that you were drunk and called the police. You were a long way over the limit."

The defendant was sentenced to 80 hours of unpaid work and banned for 25 months.

Warning him, Mr Maddock added: "It's important that you understand you are now banned from driving.

"If you carry on working and driving you will be back here and you will almost certainly be going to prison."

The court also ordered Muhtarov to pay a victim surcharge of £95 and court costs of £85.
