A primary school took its pupils on their own magic journey to one of the wizarding world’s most iconic locations – by helping them to recreate a famous magical high street.
Year 5 and 6 pupils at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary and Nursery School in Barrow created their own model version of the high street from the Harry Potter books.
This has been part of the school's protective bubble’s recent literary focus on the world famous JK Rowling series.
Twelve pupils took part in creating a model of the street and plans are being made to film a guided tour of the creation where the pupils will provide the voiceover.
The school project was conducted under the supervision of Year 6 and Key Stage 2 teacher Jennifer Marshal.
She said: “They have all worked so hard on this and they enjoyed it much. I enjoyed watching it as well.
“When we started this, I thought it was going to be old hat as I thought they would all know about the Harry Potter films, but it turned out only one of the 12 pupils had actually seen the film.
“I think they’re the generation after the ones who grew up watching the films, so it was very new to them.
“The whole thing took about four afternoons of work and every pupil was able to create their own shop.
“We based it around the first book, The Philosopher's Stone, and we used a lot of the shops that you see in that story.
“Some of the stores the pupils themselves made up, including the Evil Opticians, the Tinker Tiara which would be a jewellery shop and a hairdresser called the Butcher Barbers.
“A lot of these places would put down the notorious Knockturn Alley.
“They were inspired by some of the shops that they see every day near their homes.
“They even made one shop that would allow Muggles to go in and exchange their belongings for magical ones.
“They really got into it as we progressed in the stories.
“We have also filmed the kids reading our 'howlers' – like the one Ron gets from his mother in the second book – recipes for potions and the rules for Quidditch.
“Depending on when the school is allowed to bring more pupils back into class, we will bring other students into this. I think they’ll really enjoy it and can’t wait to continue.
“We even tweeted JK Rowling with some of the pictures; she hasn’t answered yet but who knows.”
