A FIRE chief has issued a warning to motorists after a driver had a lucky escape when their car flipped over in icy conditions.

Roger Exley, station manager at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, attended the incident in Millom, alongside fire crews from Broughton and Millom.

The accident left the car upside down on the road’s verge,

The trapped driver was freed from the car by firefighters, who had to remove the front windscreen, before being assessed by paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service.

Luckily, the driver received no injuries from the incident.

Mr Exley has now warned motorists to “be careful” during the current bout of cold weather.

He said: “Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are asking drivers to be careful out on the roads across Furness and Cumbria.

“The cold weather means the roads could be icy and therefore dangerous.”

Mr Exley also gave some advice on what drivers should do during icy conditions.

He said: “Reduce speed and keep your distance. Only drive when necessary and be prepared in your vehicle. Have warm clothes and take a flask on longer journeys.”

On Saturday, another incident saw a car flip over onto its roof on the A590 near Swarthmoor.

Police, alongside a gritter, attended the one-vehicle collision which saw the driver taken to Furness General Hospital as a precaution.

The cold weather is set to continue with a yellow weather warning for snow in place for the majority of Cumbria today.

The warning begins from 11am and is expected to be in place until just before midnight,

Hill snow may lead to some travel disruption, with some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.
