A CHRISTMAS lights display which has raised tens of thousands for charity will 'take until at least Easter' to disassemble.

Mandy and Jeremy Voakes decorate their famous hillside home in Cark every year with more than 100,000 light bulbs.

The couple began creating their eye-catching home more than 20 years ago - growing from a small Christmas display to an extensive festive arrangement.

Known locally as the 'Cark Illuminations', the display is now estimated to include about 150,000 light bulbs and takes nearly a month to assemble.

However, it is no small feat to take the lighting extravaganza down, with Mr Voakes predicting the decorations will not be untangled until Easter at the earliest.

He said: "We did quite a few on Wednesday and managed to do a few more today but it takes quite a while to take the whole thing down.

"We aim to have them all down by Easter but it may be weeks after that. They've got to be dried out then boxed away which can take a while."

Mr and Mrs Voakes have raised over £30,000 for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) since they first decorated their home two decades ago.

Mr Voakes said 2020 was a lot more popular than previous years.

"We've certainly raised more than we ever have before," he said.

"We think it's around £6,000 which is more than we've managed to raise in previous years. It's definitely a lot more popular this year.

"I never thought when we first started this we would ever get this much attention.

"The position of the house lends itself really well - so many people can drive past and get out the car safely."

The couple is hoping to return with their famous decorated home in Christmas 2022 after a well-deserved year off.
