GHOST hunters claim to have uncovered ghoulish goings-on in the grounds of a historic site.

Members of Furness Paranormal Society took their cameras to Abbot's Wood and Furness Abbey in Barrow - a site long thought to be haunted by spectres from the past.

The group claim to have encountered spirits near the grounds of the 12th Century abbey.

Hollie McLeavy said footage from the scene viewed later revealed the presence of a voice answering their question - while a figure watched on through a window.

She said: "We went along and hoped for the best and reviewing the evidence we spotted some things.

"At the time there was two voices we didn't hear in our ears but we heard them on the camera afterwards.

"We were questioning whether they were statues in the ruins and there was voice that came over the camera saying 'yes'.

"Not long after that we caught a face looking over one from one of the windows, like someone was watching us."

Miss McLeavy said the group of four wanted to investigate the site because of its rich past, having been the home of Cistercian monks.

The group used specialist equipment in attempt to track the spirits, claiming to have picked up the ghostly figures in the darkness using a scanner.

They also claimed to have heard a whisper in the woods.

Hitting back at any naysayers, Miss McCleavy said she 'loves sceptics' because 'everyone is entitled to their own opinion'.

"We've all experiences things ourselves - don't knock it till you've tried it," she said.

She said a brush with the paranormal as a child led to her to develop her belief in ghosts.

"When I was a child I had a little boy who used to follow me round," she said. "He used to sit at a computer table at bottom of my bed."

The Furness Paranormal Society, made up of five investigators, has a 'massive' backlog of locations to look into.
