The Covid-19 pandemic made 2020 a year that none of us will forget.

But for the brides and grooms who walked down the aisle, 2020 stood out for a very different reason.

The Mail is reminiscing on some of its wedding highlights of the past 12 months – taking a look back at both the pre-lockdown and post-lockdown marriages of this year.

Long-time friends Louise Robson and Paul Martin said 'I do' at the Abbey House Hotel on February 13 – a month before the coronavirus restrictions came into place.

The couple were joined by 60 guests in the day with a further 70 people joining them for the evening reception at The Soccer Bar in Barrow.

Mrs Martin said a special moment was seeing her grandad at the wedding who had just undergone a heart operation

“The first time I saw him was my wedding day and I just burst into tears,” she said.

“We’re very close and talk about everything and anything together.

“The whole day was perfect.”

Elizabeth Martin and Ryan Patterson also narrowly missed the nationwide ban on weddings.

The Grange couple said ‘I do’ at Cartmel Priory Church on March 14 in a traditional ceremony surrounded by their friends and family.

The pair said: “We thoroughly enjoyed every second but if we had to choose one of our favourite moments we would say our first dance with all our closest friends being there with us.”

Newlyweds Fiona Williams, 59, and Rob Haynes, 63, were determined on not letting the Covid-19 restrictions impact their big day.

The couple said ‘I do’ at Cragwood Country House Hotel on October 14 after first meeting five and a half years ago.

The pair proved that it is never too late to find the one after tying the knot in a 'perfect' ceremony.

Mr Haynes said: “We had planned it as a small wedding, so Covid didn't affect that. We did head up a day early to avoid any lockdown challenges. We had a great walk up to Orrest Head and lunch in Windermere the day before the ceremony.”

Lovestruck couple Bethany Negus and Ben Golfin were also determined on walking down the aisle, declaring their love for one another in front of just two witnesses.

The couple decided to elope to the picturesque Cragwood Country House Hotel on October 13.

Mrs Golfin said: "We decided that we just want to be married, so slowly fell in love with the idea to elope; just the two of us.

"As it was just the two of us we got ready together, there is no one else I’d rather be excited and nervous with than Ben."
