A BARROW sports club have reached their fundraiser target.

Hawcoat Park Sports Club have thanked the public for helping them smash their £30,000.

£20,000 of the total has been donated from the public and Sport England has allocated £10,000 to the sports club.

Hawcoat Park Chairman Paul Burns has revealed that the £30,000 ensures that the sports club will continue to survive.

Mr Burns said: “It’s amazing news.

“We had a little spell in the summer when we managed to partially open, but we have basically been closed down since 23rd March.

“With no money or anything coming, this has eased the burden significantly and without it, we would have been in dire straits.

“It is going to make a huge difference to the club.

“We have done marvellous to get to our target so quickly.”

The £30,000 total was attained with 16 days left on the club’s Crowdfunder page.

Now, the club have set a new target of £35,000.

With most of the money raised going towards bills, Mr Burns underlined that any extra funds will now cover a refurbishment on the club’s main building.

2020 has been a very difficult year for Hawcoat Park.

The onset of the Coronavirus pandemic has cancelled grassroots sports and events planned by the club.

Mr Burns said as a result of the pandemic, volunteers will now run Hawcoat Park.

Despite this, the Hawcoat Park chairman is looking forward to reopening the club’s doors and thanked everyone who has donated.

“It is great news and we would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has contributed,” Mr Burns began.

“It shows how important a sports club is to the area because the people have rallied around and made sure we can survive.

“It has been 95 years since the club opened and hopefully we can run for another 95 years.”
