Cumbria has been ranked as the second-best place in the country for young families to live in.

In a study conducted by Oxford Home Schooling, the county was only bettered by Rutland nationally.

However, Cumbria came out as number one in the North West region.

Each area was judged on a number of key factors.

These included: the percentage of schools that are rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the percentage of school places available, the affordability of housing based on average wages and property prices and the number of crimes per 1,000 people.

In Cumbria, 90 per cent of its schools are scored highly by Ofsted and 21 per cent of school places are currently available.

Wages represent 15 per cent of the average property price in Cumbria.

The county is also classed as a safe place to live, with 74 crimes being recorded per 1,000 people.

Bristol was ranked as the worst place nationally.

The region ranked poorly with school place availability, with 98 per cent of places already taken.

In addition to this, the area has a high crime rate, with 113 incidents per 1,000 people.

Salford was listed as the worst place to live in the North West.
