THE High Sheriff of Cumbria has completed suicide awareness training to coincide with her theme for her year in office, 'tackling loneliness'.
Julie Barton completed the free online training from suicide prevention charity Ever Life Matters.
She said: "It’s effectively a first aid course to keep people safer and I now feel better informed. My theme for my year in office as High Sheriff is ‘tackling loneliness’ – the offer of a chat not only tackles loneliness, but listening could help someone find that glimmer of hope.
"Importantly, the course shows how we can all play a role in helping people whose mental health is at risk. Showing you care, offering support and a listening ear can all go a long way.
"Talking about suicide saves lives. Trust your gut instincts. If you are at all worried that someone is having thoughts of suicide, ask them, and ask directly.
"It won’t put ideas in their head and being there to listen could be a lifesaver.
"Share the helpline of Samaritans too – 116123. Support is there.
"Thank you to all at Every Life Matters."
