CUMBRIA Police are considering placing more officers in Barrow town centre to tackle antisocial behaviour.

In a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour in the town, Cumbria Police have revealed they are looking into new ways to combat crime.

Among those is Barrow police having five more community beat officers, with one dedicated to the town centre area.

Calls to tackle town centre crime have arisen after a number of anti-social behaviour instances, including youths throwing paint and terrorising elderly people, have taken place earlier in the year.

The proposal was put forward by Barrow BID in a move which they believe would help alleviate anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

Inspector Gareth Jesson from Barrow Local Focus Policing team said: “It is something we are looking in to.

“There is nothing definite at the moment but we are always looking at ways we can deliver a service to the public.

“If we did have dedicated CBOs then one would be dedicated to the town centre area.”

Barrow Police also revealed they are looking at creating a new hub in the town hall for relevant partners to work from.

The shared office space would allow community leaders, like Barrow BID and Barrow police officers, to ensure ‘effective’ partnership.

Inspector Jesson said: “This is something that that all areas do and we are looking at creating a new hub location in the Town Hall that all partners can work from.

“Essentially it’s a way of ensuring partnership working is more effective.”
