NEW data plotted on a map has revealed that several areas of Barrow have soaring infections rate that are among the highest in the county.

One area in the town has a rate of over 500 new cases per 100,000 people, while concerns are being raised over rates in Ulverston.

The map includes Public Health England data in the week to October 16.

The Hawcoat and Furness Abbey area has the highest infection rate in Cumbria.

Its rate of 504.6 reflects 38 new cases in the area in the week, up by 21 from the previous week.

It means the area has the highest infection rate in the county, behind Penrith Central and West on 399.2.

Ormsgill and Hindpool has the second highest infection rate in the Barrow borough with 354.6.

Six of the top 10 highest infection rates in the county are found in areas of Barrow.

Ulverston now has an infection rate of 354.6 more three times the average rate across South Lakeland, 118.

There were 23 new cases recorded in the area.

In reaction to advancing infection rates in Barrow and Ulverston, Simon Fell, the Barrow and Furness MP ,said: "We should all be concerned about rising rates of coronavirus in our community whether in Ulverston or elsewhere.

"The virus exploits those who flout the rules and travels with them.

"I'd urge everyone to remember why these restrictions are in place and stick to the simple guidance of hands, face and space to limit its spread."
