THERE has been a call for more police on the railways, following several reported incidents.

The most recent saw a man charged with criminal damage after a window was smashed at Barrow train station.

British Transport Police Lancashire have confirmed the event happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The suspect was arrested the following day at Lancaster train station.

Robert Parker, part-time secretary at Furness Line Action Group, believes that anti-social behaviour is a common theme on the area’s trains during weekends.

He is now calling for additional policing resource to resolve the problem, before it grows too large.

“There needs to be more police officers on the ground,” Mr Parker said.

“When somebody sees a police officer in a uniform, they might think twice before attempting to throw a brick at a window or commit another crime.”

In September, British Transport Police officers were forced to use pepper spray on a 35-year-old man travelling on a Barrow train after he reportedly ‘resisted’ arrest.

This event follows a recent spate in anti-social behaviour in the Barrow area, which has raised concerns amongst residents and the council.

In response to the rise in antisocial behaviour, BTP increased their officers’ presence after Roose and Dalton stations reported similar events too.

In particular, drunken passengers were being targeted by dedicated patrols on services on the Furness Line.

No one from BTP were available to comment.

Anyone with information about anti-social behaviour can contact Cumbria Police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
