A BARROW pharmaceutical chief and a surgeon have both been honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Emma Walsmley, Chief Executive Officer at GlaxoSmithKline, has been made a dame for services to the pharmaceutical industry and business, after heading the company for three years.

The Barrow-born mum of four took on the job at GSK in March 2017.

The move, which put the 51-year-old at the steering wheel of the wider £8 billion empire, made her one of the most powerful women in the FTSE 100.

Dame Emma joined GSK in 2010 from French beauty company L'Oreal, where she spent 17 years in general management and marketing roles in Paris, London, New York and Shanghai.

Initially joining as president of GSK’s Consumer Healthcare Europe division, she also served as president and then chief executive of its Consumer Healthcare business before taking the helm of the company.

Former Furness General Hospital surgeon, Peter Duffy, has also been recognised in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Mr Duffy, who now works at Noble's Hospital on the Isle of Man, has been awarded an MBE for his 'outstanding support' during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the lockdown, he was not able to continue his surgical work so dedicated his efforts to helping patients and staff.

The consultant urologist fed and washed patients, served meals, cleaned and changed beds and even sat with and read to end of life patients when their families could not be with them.

Sarah Beale, from Dalton, has also been granted an MBE for her outstanding contribution to the community during Covid-19.

Toby Peyton-Jones, from Windermere, and Kathryn Willard, from Witherslack, are also set to receive an OBE for their devotion and vital service to their communities.
