Security cameras, extra lighting and an increase in foot patrols may be introduced to help tackle antisocial behaviour plaguing a town.

Simon Fell, MP for Barrow and Furness, has revealed he is working with Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria police to help crackdown on antisocial behaviour in Dalton.

The announcement comes after youths were spotted using drugs, racing scooters and littering around Dalton Leisure Centre.

The incidents left some parents ‘upset’ and frightened to use the centre.

Due to growing concern, bosses at Dalton Leisure Centre urged the local community to contact their MP and report any behaviour to the police.

Mr Fell responded to the concerns and announced a number of security measures were being discussed to help crackdown on antisocial behaviour.

He said: “Thank you to everyone who has been in touch about antisocial behaviour around the leisure centre in Dalton and beyond.

“Just to keep you updated, we have been working with the community policing team and local residents on this issue.

“Soon we should see extra lighting and CCTV in place to tamp down on this behaviour, and an increase in foot patrols.

“Within the next 18 months we should also have a dedicated officer in place for Dalton. If you do have concerns, get back in touch with my office.

“We’re keeping a regular dialogue going with the police and the local community so we do want to hear your views.”

Rachel Murphy, a teacher from Askam, was "concerned" about youths racing on their scooters whilst picking up her nine-year-old daughter from swimming class at Dalton Leisure Centre.

The mum said it is "reassuring" action is being taken but is "concerned" about how long it may take for measures to be put in place.

She said: “I think it’s really reassuring something is being done.

“I’m a bit concerned these things are going to take 18 months: these are immediate issues which need to be tackled now.

“It’s positive steps but it’s not going to sort antisocial behaviour happening tonight or tomorrow.”
