Numerous people sent in spectacular photos showing streaks of lightning flashing in the night-time sky.
A yellow thunderstorm warning is in place for today and tomorrow and covers the whole of England and Wales.
The Met Office warns the storms could bring ‘transport disruption and localised flooding’.
The organisation says there is a ‘small chance’ of homes and businesses being flooded and a ‘slight chance’ of power cuts.
Spray and flooding could also lead to difficult driving conditions on roads, increasing the risk of accidents occurring.
There is a small chance of ‘fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.’
