A RESCUE team was called out after a woman stepped on a nail whilst out walking.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team and Cumbria Police were dispatched at 4.09pm yesterday afternoon after a woman stepped on a nail which penetrated her boot whilst exploring the Saddlestone Quarries on the main route up to the Old Man of Coniston.

A full team call-out of 15 volunteer members attended the incident and helped carry the injured woman off the hill with the boot and nail still in place.

She was stretchered down to the ambulance at High Brandy Crag, and then drove down to the Fell Gate car park where her family were waiting.

After giving her pain relief, her husband drove her to A&E for further treatment.

The incident took one hour and 45 minutes.
