MULTIPLE fire crews were called out after two horses became stuck in a river in South Lakeland.

Roger Exley, station manager for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, posted a picture on his Twitter page showing the equines being led from the water.

Mr Exley said crews from Windermere, Kendal and Penrith were called to the incident in the River Rothay in the Ambleside area.

He said: “Just wanted to share some of the different work our firefighters across Cumbria are involved in.”

The police also attended.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Officers were called at 3.28pm on July 30 to the report of two horses getting stuck in the River Rothay in Ambleside.

“The fire service attended and swiftly helped the horses out of the river.

The spokeswoman said the horses were now back in the stables.
