CALLS have been made to introduce cycle lanes on the A590 to help bikers ‘feel safe’ whilst commuting into Barrow.

Questions have been raised about whether cycleways could be built on the A590 between Ulverston and Barrow.

The call comes after it was announced Barrow could see a number of pop up cycleways on its roads as part of a multi-million pound government funding scheme.

Barrow and the South Lakes have been put forward by Cumbria County Council to the Department for Transport (DfT) for consideration for funding as part of their £225m Emergency Active Travel Fund.

Pop up cycleways and pedestrian priority are the schemes proposed for a number of roads in Barrow including: Abbey Road, Cornwallis Street, Bridge Road and Michaelson Road.

Keen competitive Ulverston cyclist and paramedic Jack Talbot hopes the remainder of funding will be spent on cycle lanes on the A590.

He said: “I think it’s a really positive step in the right direction for the town.

“I’m hoping to see some of the remainder of the funding spent on protected cycleways for the A590, for people from surrounding areas to commute into Barrow by bike.”

Mr Talbot said cycle lanes would help those travelling on bikes feel safe while commuting into Barrow.

He said: “Improving the A590 in this way would make such a difference in helping people to feel safe when cycle-commuting into the town.”
