A RAIL firm has commissioned an artist to support the message that the Lake District is closed to visitors.

Avanti West Coast has commissioned artist, Sophie Martin based on the edge of the Lake District, to create artwork that depicts the Lakes to support the message the region is closed to visitors during the COVID-19 crisis.

This is part of a series of artwork showcasing destinations along the West Coast Main Line to remind people on social media that train services are for those making essential journeys and who have no alternative.

Miss Martin said: “Herdwick sheep and outdoors activities epitomise the Lake District for me so this seemed the perfect combination to get the message across.

"Plus I love drawing sheep.

"Hopefully people will take heed and not travel to the area unnecessarily and leave the fells to our woolly friends to enjoy for now."
