Controlled explosions have been carried out on a west Cumbrian beach by bomb disposal experts.

Whitehaven Coastguard Team was called out to Drigg beach on Saturday after reports came through of some ordnance being spotted.

The small unexploded items, believed to be from World War Two, were located and then members of the Royal Logistic Corp Bomb Disposal carried out controlled explosions on the beach.

The coastguard team added that this was not an uncommon occurrence but said: "If you happen upon a suspicious item on the beach, don't be tempted to touch or remove it, mark the location or take a reference, for example a map grid or use the "What3words app" and dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
