Whilst the Bootle Scrambles club were hosting the first round of the Kia National Twinshock Trials championship, the Cumbria Moto X club was getting its first event of the season underway just a few miles down the road on the Route 44 Moto X track at Haverigg.

A good entry for the two day meeting, which attracted over 150 riders on the Saturday, was swelled even more on the Sunday by many Furness competitors who had intended to compete in the first round of the British Championships down on the Little Silver track in Devon.

Unfortunately they`d made the long trip for nothing, as the organisers were left with no choice but to abandon the event due to a waterlogged track, and the following day’s weather forecast was not good. Undaunted, most of them made the long dash back to Cumbria to race at Haverigg.

Having missed all the events on Saturday, and the all important setting up and track time, they still put in some good performances.

The Keith family were one of the many who made the long journey back, but young Jamie Keith, who is no stranger to the Haverigg track, showed no signs of travel sickness and salvaged their weekend by going out on his Urban Extreme/MBR racing small wheel 85cc KTM, and promptly won all three of his races on the Sunday. The previous day saw Askam`s Gavin Southward taking runner up spot in the Adult C under 30 class after a hard scrap with Shaun Murphy. Both riders were lucky to avoid a first corner pile up which at first looked horrendous, but amazingly all riders got up, remounted, and were soon chasing after the pack.

Another schoolboy refugee from Little Silver was Finley Pickering, who after some good rides took third overall in the 65cc event, while Gavin Southward just missed out on a podium with a hard earned fourth place in Sunday’s over 30s C class. Well done lads.

The MCF federation, which licences the track, has withdrawn all permits until April 14th when it will review the present coronavirus situation.
