A CHEER for shop workers and delivery drivers which reflects the NHS ‘clap for carers’ is planned for tomorrow.

People who work in our supermarkets and essential shops are being given a public share of gratitude after the popularity of last Thursday’s applause for NHS workers.

Shop workers, warehouse staff and delivery drivers are considered as putting themselves at higher risk of contracting coronavirus in order to serve the public.

Adam Murray, manager of Aldi in Risedale Road, said he was ‘hugely appreciative’ of the effort to recognise supermarket workers.

He said: “It’s massively positive and great that the community is coming together again exactly a week after the applause for the NHS.

“I feel honoured and proud to be working in this sector right now.”

However, Mr Murray believes the cheer should stretch further to include the postal service, bin men and delivery crews.

“It shouldn’t just be retail and supermarkets,” he said.

“Bin men, delivery men and lots of others are working hard across the country.

“I think there should be some sort of recognition for everyone.”

Mr Murray, who has been delivering Aldi shopping to vulnerable people after work hours, said customers have been thanking staff every day.

“I’d say one in every four customers are thanking an employee at the till,” he said.

“We haven’t had any fights or trouble - everyone’s been really grateful and appreciative.

“No one has been complaining about queues or anything.

“I think people understand the severity of the situation.

“It’s great to see everyone pull together as a town.”

The UK’s supermarkets had their best month on record as panic-buying shoppers rushed to stockpile ahead of the country’s coronavirus lockdown, spending an extra £1.9bn on supplies.

Market data provider Kantar said yesterday that overall sales were up 20.6 per cent in the four weeks to March 22.

In celebration of this, Aldi has given all staff members a ten per cent pay rise.

The cheer will take place tomorrow from 8pm.
