HEARTFELT tributes have poured in for a dedicated Barrow AFC fan who will be ‘sadly missed’.

John Woods, who grew up in Barrow but lived in London, was an ardent Bluebirds' supporter for decades and had been a keen follower of the club's journey, from the football league days to the more recent quest to return to that level.

Fellow Barrow AFC fan and friend Jamie Moore described him as a ‘true gentleman’.

He said: “John was a regular friendly face for those Barrow fans who ventured to London for away trips.

“He had time for conversation with everyone and he will be missed greatly by those who knew him.

Simon Nichols: “I met John 12 years ago and we bonded instantly over our shared passion for Barrow AFC.

“He was an integral part of the Southern Exiles and we regularly shared adventures up and down the country watching Barrow and also playing pool matches against fellow supporters clubs in London pubs.

“I have many amazing memories as John’s dry humour and banter was equalled only by his generosity.

“A true gent who I feel lucky to have had as a good friend as he enriched my life.”

Bob Steed said: “Many people will be saddened to learn of the loss of John Woods.

“Many friends of John have mentioned his sense of humour, often directed at matchday officials, or a well observed remark to friends whilst travelling to matches.

“His football friends are sad that we have lost a fine member of the Barrow AFC family.

“Our thoughts are with his sister Barbara and the family.

“During his life John had the respect of many people he met. He will be sorely missed. John was a good man.”

A Barrow AFC spokesman said: “All at Barrow AFC were extremely saddened to learn of the passing of supporter John Woods.

“It is difficult to put into words the lengths John went to in support of the club over a long period and our thoughts are with all of John’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”
