ULVERSTON Town Council’s environmental sustainability committee has celebrated the council’s major success in securing a “green triumph” for the town.

The town council recently secured a visit from Professor Mike Berners-Lee, author of the acclaimed book There Is No Planet B. A capacity audience of more than 600, with many others unable to get tickets, came to Coronation Hall to hear this world-leading advocate of strong action to counter adverse climate change which is threatening survival of our planet.

The town council wholly funded this event and has devoted a large chunk of its resource to securing change and increasing awareness in Ulverston.

This includes offering modest grants to groups seeking to improve and extend recycling, reducing vehicle emissions, outlawing unnecessary plastics, reducing over-consumption, composting, planting more and more trees, reducing food miles, reducing fossil fuel use and any other relevant projects.

Ulverston Town Council has agreed to fund and organise a repeat of its highly successful September Eco Fair in the coming autumn. The Eco Fair and the Berners-Lee event are, we believe the most significant demonstration of the public will to tackle climate change yet seen in Furness and we will continue to expand our efforts.

It is important to stress that this effort has unanimously been pushed forward by Labour and Conservative councillors.
