Barrow Borough Council has recently announced it is to house four Syrian refugee families, of up to four people, who have fled the crisis-hit country and are living in refugee camps.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that around 3870,000 people, of whom 115,000 were civilians, have died in the conflict, with millions fleeing their homes.

The Mail readers have reacted to the news:

Peter Grimshaw said: "No doubt the people who have been on the waiting list for a while will be overjoyed by this."

Leanne Longmire said: "Everyone complains yet I’ve seen plenty of people on the list saying they’ve turned down properties or not bid because they 'don’t want that area'. In my opinion, you get what you’re given - if you’re that in need, you’ll take it!"

Juliana Shaw said: "Charity begins at home - our ex-service men and women for start."

Matthew ODonnell said: "This is a joke for actual people who are from Barrow but cannot get housed or takes years to get a property."

Louise Wilkes said: "I mean these people had to leave their home country with no possessions because people were killing them. Have some empathy."

Tristan Rog said: "Housing should be priority for anyone that needs it not just a set group, bit silly when you think about it."

Claire Bonney said: "I am desperately in need of a three bedroom as housing benefit no longer covers the rising costs of privately rented and yet they are very rarely available. Yes, do this, but have the decency to start building some new council homes too."

John Earnshaw said: "If anyone had actually talked to a refugee from Syria, many who are hard working people and actually understood what they had been through by being bomed out of their houses, you might be a bit more tolerant if it was you and your family in that position."

Barbara Stewart said: "Barrow Council letting local people down again."

Martini Rossineri said: "It's ok helping others... Once you've sorted your own out."

Robert Turnbull said: "Why help these Syrian family's when you walk down Dalton Road and there's people sleeping rough - think they should get priority."

Ann Forristal said: "Here we go again... Doesn't matter about our homeless."
