FIFTY red roses were distributed as part of a poignant commemoration event for Holocaust Memorial Day
Roses became a symbol of remembrance of the women held in Ravensbruck concentration camp, and the 50 people who attended the event were each presented with a rose by which to remember those women, and everyone who was murdered in the Holocaust.
Extracts of testimony of Holocaust survivors and of people who perished in the Holocaust were read by Julie Ward MEP, representatives from trade unions, Barrow Borough Councillors and Unite Against Fascism at an event in Barrow.
The commemoration also featured the film ‘Surviving Auschwitz - Prisoner 84303’ - an interview with Holocaust Survivor Zigi Shipper.
The event was organised by Barrow Trades Union Council.
Organiser Mandy Penellum said “We were honoured to hold the commemoration in memory of all those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and under Nazi persecution, and in honour of the Survivors. It is vitally important that we never forget and that we pledge to never let this happen again.”
