PARKSIDE Academy’s reception class has been immersing itself in the Chinese culture recently, as schoolchildren celebrated the New Year in style.

The children really enjoyed this and had a ‘fantastic’ week learning all about the Chinese New Year.

They wrote sentences to describe the different ways that people celebrate the new year, and even tried a variety of Chinese foods.

The reception class tried their hand at cooking the Chinese delicacy, the spring roll, in class which helped to develop their understanding of cuisine in a hands on basis.

The children learned about the history of Chinese New Year and why each year is named after a different animal.

Through a Yoga session ran by YoKids, the children explored different movements to re-enact the story too.

The Parkside student even put their crafting abilities to the test to make Chinese lanterns from paper and good luck envelopes to take home to their families.

Jemma Bell, reception class teacher, said: “The children enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year, learning about different cultures and celebrations from around the world.

“They were immersed in the range of experiences and activities throughout the week and parents even commented on how much knowledge the children had remembered about this celebration.”
