HIGHWAYS England has suggested that an extension to a hotel will not cause problems for the A590.

The Swan Hotel, in Newby Bridge, at the foot of Windermere, has recently applied for planning permission for an extended wing which would create 26 more bedrooms.

However, Colton Parish Council has objected to the planning application, saying there has not been enough consideration given to the impact the work would have on the roads around the site.

A spokesman for Highways England said: “We haven’t been consulted but we’ve looked at the proposals and the trip numbers it is generating wouldn’t be a concern for us.

“The hotel isn’t accessed directly from the A590 either so we wouldn’t have concerns with safety as a direct result of these proposals.”

Roads near the hotel can become congested by a few cars parked in the wrong place, it is suggested by the council.

The council made it clear that they did not object to the extension of the hotel itself, but would like to see the hotel engage with the community on this issue as roads near the hotel can become congested easily.

There is currently a consultation period in place which ends on Thursday, January 30.
