PATIENTS have been urged to show their support to keep a GP surgery in operation.

Askam Surgery is facing an uncertain future after the retirement of sole GP Dr Prakashchandra Jain.

Currently being investigated following an allegation of sexual assault, he is due to officially retire in March.

Bosses at the Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group are trying to determine the needs of the area and asking residents to have their say.

Councillor Ben Shirley urged people to make their voices heard.

He said: “I am working on setting up a petition so that everyone can sign it who cares about retaining a local GP practice and then I’ll present it to the CCG.

“But don’t rely on this alone, please, do attend the drop in sessions at the surgery and have your say. Working together with the local community, the CCG and others, we will do everything possible to regain our local practice in Askam.

“A key part of this process is to attend the drop in sessions.”

A Morecambe Bay CCG spokesman said: “To determine the best options for future provision, we will consider the needs of the local area and will come up with options which meet the needs of the local people, deliver the highest possible quality of care and are sustainable long-term. We will be undertaking a Health Needs Analysis, which will include the gathering of patient and stakeholder views.”

Drop in sessions take place at the practice on:

- January 22 between 6.30pm and 8pm

- January 23 between 11am and 12.30pm

- January 28 between 2pm and 3.30pm

- January 29 between 6.30pm and 8pm
