THE M6 motorway is currently closed in both directions following a crash. 

The M6 in Lancashire is currently closed in both directions between J33 and J34 near Lancaster due to an on going Lancashire Police led incident.

Lancashire Police are urging motorists to 'avoid the area' whilst they deal with the incident.

There is approximately one mile of congestion approaching the closures on both north and southbound carriageways.

If you are planning to use this route please leave plenty of extra journey times.

Diversions are in place are as detailed below:

Northbound diversions are signed by the hollow triangle symbol - Exit J33, at the roundabout take second exit to Lancaster A6.

Follow A6 through Galgate and past Lancaster University. Follow A6 through Scotforth, at Infirmary roundabout take second exit to City Centre A6.

Follow one-way system through city centre staying in right-hand lane. At Sainsbury's traffic signals, follow Kirkby Lonsdale A683 (M6), keeping in right-hand lane.

After going through a further 3 sets of signals, move into left-hand lane still following Kirkby Lonsdale A683 (M6). Continue along A683 Caton Road, at M6 J34 traffic signals turn left onto slip road to rejoin M6 at J34.

Southbound diversions are signed by the hollow square symbol - Exit J34, at the traffic signals turn left on to the A683 towards Lancaster.

Follow the A683 (Caton Road) until the traffic signalled junction of Caton Road/ Bulk Road. At the traffic signals turn left on to the left lane of the one-way section of Caton Street, A6. Follow this road until the Traffic signalled junction with Parliament Street. 

At this junction turn left on to North Road, following the one-way system through Lancaster town centre. At the end of Thurnham Street turn left on to Penny Street/South Road. 

At the roundabout follow the A6 straight across on to Greaves Road. Follow this road past the University and through Galgate. At J33 roundabout take first exit and then second left on to the Southbound entry slip.

For traffic approaching the delays locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and you may wish to re-route or delay your journey.
