A BARROW pub has vowed to ‘address its issues’ after receiving a low food hygiene rating.

Bosses at the Crofters in Holbeck, Barrow, said they were ‘shocked’ and ‘disappointed’ after being awarded a one out of five in a recent food hygiene inspection.

The pub was inspected by officers from Barrow Borough Council on December 10 where it was rated under the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

During the inspection, officers found ‘major improvement necessary’ in the management of food safety and the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building.

The hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was deemed ‘generally satisfactory’.

John Wheeler, owner and manager of Crofters, said he was ‘very disappointed’ with the rating score.

He said: “We were very disappointed with the latest inspection.

“The kitchen is a little tired and there are a number of structural issues which need addressing that we are aware of.

“We will be requesting a revisit in the future.

“We accept the inspecting officer’s findings but are a little shocked with his score.

“We will be looking closely at the report and addressing the issues raised.”

Councillor Tony Callister, spokesperson for licensing and public protection at Barrow Borough Council, said: “The team are always keen to work with businesses across the borough to help them identify how they can improve their existing rating, and ensure it is the best it can possibly be for the future.

“We would encourage food business operators who have not achieved a satisfactory rating, to request a re-score visit.”
