POLICE officers completed drug raids in Cumbria along with a number of other crime reducing initiatives as part of a 'Week of Action' across the county.

Among the actions undertaken was the execution of a warrant at an address on St George’s Road, Millom, in relation to suspected misuse of drugs.

Officers from Cumbria police dog unit were also in attendance.

Police said that a quantity of drugs were recovered along with a quantity of cash, and a55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A drugs, cultivation of cannabis and money laundering.

Another man, aged 56, was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class B controlled substances. Both have since been released under investigation.

Another drugs bust took place in Barrow on January 7, where a property had Class A drugs seized from the property, and a man was given a cannabis warning.

Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall said: “The police are dealing with all types of crime, including those highlighted in this week of action every day. The point of a week of action is to focus on those issues which the public tell us concern them locally and to send a strong message to people who break the law, that the police can and do respond and you will be caught.”

In the Barrow area the week of action saw the local team partnering with a number of agencies from the borough council's environmental health and housing teams using a partnership approach to tackle community issues.

A joint traffic operation early in the week saw 80 to 100 vehicles stopped resulting in two car seizure. Four immediate vehicle prohibitions were issued for violations and a driver had his licence revoked due to safety concerns.

Officers also carried out a joint operation with British Transport Police to target those travelling into Cumbria which resulted in the arrest of a man for possession with intent to supply and six stop searches.

Officers also worked with partners from South Lakeland District Council and Cumbria County Council's civil enforcement team to tackle parking and fly tipping issues within the Ulverston area. Both areas saw warrants being undertaken across the week with property being seized.

South Cumbria superintendent Sarah Jackson said: “The week of action was a great success. Officers have been working continuously on issues important to our local community which we will continue to work on throughout the year with our partner agencies.

“Cumbria is not a soft touch, and we hope this week sends out a message to those who target us.”
