WHEN in search of a potential dining spot in Ulverston, one pub always comes out as a foodie favourite: The Farmer's Arms.

Renowned for its rustic menu and modern interior, the Market Square pub promises classic pub grub in contemporary surroundings.

The pub is notoriously busy on weekends so booking was essential to secure a table, especially during the festive period.

Located in the heart of the town centre, the place was inundated with staff parties and family get-togethers, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Beyond the friendly ambience, the pub was decorated to the nines, with fairy lights and festive music an absolute given.

The menu choice is something the pub prides itself on, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options all available.

We opted for a sharing platter starter of large nachos with BBQ pulled pork, not quite realising the 'large' element of this dish.

Tortilla chips, gooey mozzarella, jalapenos, house salsa and cooling sour cream with pulled pork arrived in a timely fashion, much to our surprise based on the busyness of the pub.

The plate was huge - in an attempt not to ruin our appetite for the main course, we requested a doggy bag straight away.

The nachos were exquisite. Unlike other restaurants which deliver a few Doritos with stringy cheese on top, these were in the elite nacho category.

The blend of flavours created a delectable taste which made you go back for more and more.

As starters go, this was pretty up there but beware of the deceivingly big portion size.

For the main course, I was torn between the mussels (major fish enthusiast) and one of the pub's famous gourmet burgers.

In the end we both opted for The Farmer's Burger, which was a handmade steak burger with gooey cheese, crispy bacon, salad leaves, onion rings, beef tomato, red onion, all piled in a toasted brioche bun with chips.

The burger was definitely the right choice. There was just the right amount of bacon, cheese and salad which all complemented each ingredient within the bun.

The homemade chips were also a tasty addition.

After unfortunately choosing a slightly large starter, we struggled to finish the burger and requested another doggy bag.

Overall, a great dining experience with great service.
