SCHOOLS are set for a boost to their funding, according to the UK Government.

Barrow and Furness is set to see a £53m investment into schools across the area.

Government ministers say the funding boost will make up part of £14bn being put into schools across the country over the next three years.

Simon Fell, the Conservative MP for Barrow and Furness, welcomed the cash boost.

He said: “Every child deserves to receive a superb education - regardless of which school they attend, or where they grew up and I am delighted that schools right across Barrow and Furness will see a total budget of £53m, giving teachers, parents and pupils the certainty to plan, and supercharging standards in our schools.

“We should not accept the idea that there can be ‘winners or losers’ when it comes to our children’s futures.

“That’s why we are providing additional funding now and for the future for every school, with those that were historically underfunded receiving the greatest increase.

“This funding will make sure that every parent in Barrow and Furness can be sure their children are getting a world-class education that is right for them, and none are held back from reaching their potential.”

Every secondary school will receive at least £5,000 per pupil and every primary school will receive at least £3,750 per pupil next year, which will rise to £4,000 per pupil the following year, the Conservatives said.

Barrow Labour councillor Dave Pidduck said: “The background to this is obviously that the government has spent the last 10 years cutting funding to schools as part of its so-called austerity programme. But if money is coming then we will welcome it with open arms.

“I would like to make sure the funding is going to put into the right areas, such as for children with educational difficulties.”

The Conservatives have also indicated could change the way schools are funded, by moving from local authority area formulas to a national formula which would directly determine what each school receives.

Currently, a national formula is used to determine how much each local authority receives. However, that money is then allocated to each school via their own formulas, meaning the government cannot say exactly how much each school will receive, as it depends on how each local authority will distribute the money.

A list of every school to receive a boost has been released, showing the indicative level of funding per pupil according to the national funding formula:
