A TOWN could be set for a raft of improvements as part of a multi-million pound fund.

Dalton could receive as much as £3 million if stakeholders are successful with a bid for the money which comes as part of a government initiative.

Dalton South county councillor Des English said those behind the bid were confident of receiving the money.

The funding could be used for upgrading the town’s parking, revitalising a closed play park and sprucing shop fronts, Cllr English said.

Members of the county council’s local committee in Barrow were said to have backed Dalton’s bid and would work alongside town councillors to put forward ideas of how to use the money.

Mr English said: “We are in the running for the money and it’s looking likely we are going to be successful.”

The money would come from the government’s Borderlands Growth Deal, which allocated £394.5 million for five local authorities, including Cumbria County Council.

“It’s time for some money to be put into Dalton, because the town needs it," he said.

“It would be a great boost. It justly deserves something to be spent on it.

“We just have to see now if it comes to fruition.

“We could do all sorts of things to make the town look nice.”

As well as installing new parking laybys, he suggested some of the money could be used to bring back Storey Square park to its former glory.

Play equipment at the park was taken away under budget cuts by Barrow Council, much to disappointment of nearby families.

A group has been attempting to raise around £40,000 to fund new equipment after drawing up plans with designers Playdale.
