POLICE have urged road-users to take extra care during winter after a woman was knocked down by a car near to Barrow shipyard.

Police were called at around 6.30am on Thursday after a 999 call reported a collision involving a pedestrian and a car in Michaelson Road near to the King's Gate entrance to the shipyard.

The pedestrian, a woman, was taken to Furness General Hospital after suffering leg injuries.

The vehicle, a Ford Focus, was being driven by a 23-year-old man from Dalton.

He was not injured in the collision.

Police have advised all road-users to be aware of their surroundings during the winter months when the mornings are darker and the sun sets earlier in the evenings.

Motorists are urged to take extra care at busy times while pedestrians are encouraged to wear reflective clothing in poorly-lit areas to allow road-users to see them.

Sergeant David Procter said: “It’s important that during the winter months, both road users and pedestrians are vigilant of their surroundings as the night get darker.

“There are simple steps that cyclists or pedestrians can take to make sure they are visible to other road users such as wearing reflective strips and decent lights.

"Drivers can also take steps to keep other road users safe by being extra vigilant in built up areas of those around them and in bad weather when visibility can be reduced further.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
