Mail readers react to calls to give mobility scooter users road safety training

Graham Wilson Yes they should have training - I've seen a few on the side of busy roads with traffic in near misses trying to manoeuvre around them, surely this isn't a safe way of travel for the elderly and disabled.

John Wright Yes seen few outside pub all day and certain one's staggering back to their scooter.

Maureen Balding I totally agree my husband would have loved a mobility scooter but I know if he'd be a danger so I'll stick to pushing him in a manual one hard as it is.

Linda Methven And pass a competency test too!

Mike Forsyth Also they should have insurance. The way some people drive the things they are a danger to others

Darren Collinson If we have to have a licence and insurance that's me stuck in the house all the time as I wouldn't pass a medical. Also would that mean drop curbs will be better I prefer to be on the pavement but sometimes i have no choice but to use the road. Stop the kids pulling wheelies in the town centre and order them to have a licence and get insurance.

Belle Jones They should have bell or something like that, as they come up behind you without warning, many times have stepped sideways and nearly been run over by one from behind.

Susan Kent Yes some are like small mini cars.

Norman Hird My view is: I shudder when I see some users and the way they travel. I would have no problem taking a small course. BUT I do think there are some people who are ignorant of those is wheelchairs and scooters. So we should look at doing training for both wheelchairs and scooters and awareness for those to have a better understanding. It's a two way problem.

Angela Williamson Really think people should be assessed to see if they actually need one. One lady I see daily using one can also run to catch a bus. Obviously one who doesn't need one.

Gill Mcphillips Yep. Especially going up one way streets!
