THE low prices and widespread availability of illegal drugs in places like Barrow has led to a large spike in drug driving, according to police.

Growing numbers of young men are taking a risk behind the wheel by driving under the influence of cocaine or cannabis.

This has come to light because of new legal powers and roadside technology made available in the last couple of years.

Drug wipes applied at the roadside can quickly tell police whether or not someone has taken cocaine or cannabis. Those who fail will be tested back at the station for other substances.

What do these figures tell us about society at large?

Does it mean more people are using drugs or did drug drivers always exist, but were never caught on the same scale? Or is it that the new kits and proactive policing are helping catch more offenders in the act?

It is hard to be certain but whatever the reasons, the message from the police is clear.

If you are stopped, you will be tested and if you fail the test, you will be prosecuted.

It is a message that our young people, including women and older generations need to heed as the area gears up towards Christmas and a time of socialising.

It just isn’t worth the damage or risk.
