CHILDREN, staff and governors of Crosthwaite Church of England Primary School said a fond farewell to their longest-serving governor.

Matthew Dobson, who was also a pupil at the school many years ago, has served on the governing body for more than 36 years.

Chair of governors Judi Webster paid tribute to Mr Dobson, commenting on his impressive record over such a long period of unbroken service.

She said that he had served the school faithfully during his time as a governor, being a font of vital local knowledge for a number of head teachers over the decades. She added that they had all benefited enormously from, and appreciated, his support, decisive comments and especially his sense of humour.

Chair of governors Judi Webster presented Mr Dobson with a specially-commissioned acrylic painting of the school and a voucher to spend on a special meal. In the New Year he is travelling to Australia to attend his grand-daughter's wedding and in recognition of this he also received an Antipodean guide book and a corked hat.

Head teacher Matthew Jessop said: "The whole school would like to place on record their huge thanks for all Mr Dobson's support and faithful service.

"We look forward to seeing him around school and the area in the future, as well as hearing about his adventures in Australia when he returns."
