STORE bosses have revealed when Barrow's Marks & Spencer is going to close.

Earlier this year the company announced the Barrow store was one of 100 earmarked for closure by 2022.

Marks and Spencer on Dalton Road was initially set to close in November 2019 to coincide with the opening of a new M&S foodhall at the Beehive site in Ulverston.

However due to delays in the construction the completion date was put back with bosses only revealing the opening would be in the Spring.

Now The Mail has learned that the Barrow store will close for good in March 2020 after operating in the town for more than 100 years.

Regular shopper Maureen Hartley travels to Barrow from Millom to visit M&S.

She said she will continue to do so after March and will travel to the new Ulverston store.

"It is a real shame that Barrow's high streets is losing M&S but it won't stop me from shopping there," Mrs Hartley, of Bowness Road, said.

"I've been shopping in M&S for years. I'll travel through to Ulverston when the new shop opens."

Staff from the Barrow store have been offered the opportunity to transfer to the Ulverston foodhall which will have a workforce of 70.

An M&S spokesman said: “We’re looking forward to opening our new foodhall in Ulverston in Spring next year, offering our very best food products and a Click & Collect point for Clothing & Home online orders.

“Our Barrow store will close the day before and the brilliant team will continue to serve customers from the new foodhall. We’ll keep the community updated as plans for our new store progress.”
