CHILDREN from a primary school and nursery got to experience a glimpse behind the scenes of how Walney's firefighters save lives.

Vickerstown Primary School reception pupils were joined by children from their Brambles Nursery for a visit to Walney Fire Station.

Around 35 children made the trip across the road to the fire base in Mill Lane.

There they were shown around by police community support officer and firefighter Phil Sullivan, who had been working with the school.

He showed them behind the scenes at the fire station and the on-board equipment found in a fire engine.

The youngsters then got to try their hands with water equipment firefighters use to tackle blazes.

Sarah Leahy, the school's reception teacher and early years lead, said: "The children absolutely loved it.

"It was part of a series we are doing call 'out and about'.

"Phil is a PCSO who comes in to see us at school so he was the one who took us round the fire station.

"He had done some talks on safety and had the great idea of taking us to the fire station."

The trip also saw pupils see the fire service's 'jaws of life', hydraulic rescue tools used to free crash victims from their cars.

More pupils from other years at the school are due to make visits to the fire station over the half term.
