SPORT: Celebrity, Tony Bowman, 84, was a guest at Elterwater Independent Hostel after winning a raffle – as well as a race – at Ambleside Sports.

Mr Bowman won the raffle of a two-night stay in an ensuite room.

He has broke 13 British track and field records, and next month he heads to Jesolo in Italy to compete in the decathlon at the European Masters Championships.

He took up hurdling – again – at the age of 65, and since he turned 70 Tony has been competing in both decathlon and pentathlon events.

Tony has been involved in sport for most of his life, after winning the Middlesex Schools Hurdles as a schoolboy; at 15 he came second in the All-England Schools championship.

He later played county-level hockey, and also played and coached tennis. His wife Betty was a keen a swimmer, and they met playing for a mixed hockey team.

Said hotel owner Christine Thomas: “We were delighted to welcome such an enthusiastic couple.

"Tony told us that his ambition is to run 100m at the age of 100.

"We wish him the very best in these endeavours and hope to welcome him and Betty back to the hostel in the future.”

The hostel also supports the very youngest runners, sponsoring the fell race for the juniors each year at the Sports.
