HUNDREDS of visitors enjoyed the Lakeland traditions on offer at Rusland Show.

The event, organised by Rusland Valley Horticultural Society (RVHS), was held at Whitestock Meadow and played host to a variety of exhibitions - from rural craft to horticulture.

Visitors were treated to events such as fell racing, fancy dress competitions, pet shows, children’s racing, hound trials, a dog-with-waggiest-tail competition, and many more.

RVHS secretary Maureen Boyren said: “Without the support of the committee members and volunteers we wouldn’t have a show, so thank you to them.

“The show is a way of raising money so we keep this wonderful family-fun tradition alive.

“We get visitors coming from all over as we provide such a wide variety of events.

“It is a great day, which brings holiday-makers, visitors and regulars to the area to show the beauty of Cumbria.”

However, Ms Boyren did admit the build-up to the show was difficult.

“We thought the weather might be an issue, but the sun was out and we’ve had a good day.”

She also revealed more good news.

“With the funds raised from raffles and sponsorships, we’ve been able to purchase the field for the first time in the event’s long history," she said.

“This means we can secure the annual show.”

The show was in full swing just after noon on Saturday as the senior fell runners set off on the five-mile race.

“We’ve never had so many competitors; this year in the senior race alone there are around 70 runners,” said Ms Boyren.

During the morning, judges were awarding prizes throughout the exhibitions, and Ms Boyren received a special surprise for all her hard work.

Committee member Colin Barr said: “We were delighted to award Maureen with the Best Floral award and Best Horticultural award."

He added: "It is volunteers like her which are so important for shows like this to run smoothly.”
