A MOTORIST was caught drunk behind the wheel of an ice cream van after having a row with his dad, a court heard.

Zak Wahab Aslam, who drives his dad Mo Rammy’s ice cream vans, was stopped by police on the A590 at Lindale Hill.

Officers had spotted him driving past Newby Bridge services and ‘swerving all over the road’ on July 12, South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court heard.

The 19-year-old was taken to Barrow Police Station where he provided a breath sample which revealed he had 53 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35 microgrammes of alcohol.

Prosecutor Pam Ward told the court: “It was in the early hours of July 12. Observations were passed between police officers regarding an ice cream van being driven by someone who might be over the limit. This was at 2.27am.

“The van passed a police patrol at Newby Bridge and the vehicle was swerving all over the road.”

Representing himself, Aslam told the court he had got behind the wheel of the ice cream van after having a fight with his dad.

“I was in a situation with my dad; things got aggressive and I got kicked out of his house,” he said.

“The only thing that was going through my head was to drive and go to my mum’s house in Bolton.”

Aslam told the court he now lives with his mum in Silverdale Road in Bolton but still attends Furness College.

“I moved back to my mum’s following the altercation with my dad,” he added.

“I’ll probably now have to claim benefits or work out how I can continue my studies.

“I don’t have any income at the moment.”

Aslam admitted drink driving and was banned for 15 months by District Judge Gerald Chalk.

The driving ban will be reduced by a quarter if Aslam completes the drink-drivers rehabilitation course.

He was also fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £32 victim surcharge.

The total of £237 owed to the court must be paid at a rate of £20 per month.
