FAMILIES in Barrow attempted to smash a new Guinness World Record for the most amount of people taking place in an egg and spoon race.

Children had an egg-cellent time at Barrow Park joining in The Biggest Sports Day in celebration of Action For Children’s 150th birthday.

There was a special egg and spoon race, in which children at the Barrow event competed against others at 51 services taking place across the country.

Erin Tubman, children services worker at Action for Children, was involved in the organisation of the event in Barrow.

She said: “Today’s event was about promoting childhood and children playing.

“We wanted to get as many children as we could outside playing and doing something active.

“We have been competing against other Action for Children events worldwide, seeing how many people we can get involved.

“It’s been brilliant, we’ve had 116 children participating in our activities.

“It’s been amazing to see everyone enjoying themselves.

“We want to say a massive thank you to all of the park staff who have helped us organise the event as well as the cafe who supplied us with food.”

Deputy mayor councillor Helen Wall was there to support the event.

She said: “It’s a privilege and a joy to be invited today and it has been great to just chat to some of the families who are here.

“There has been a fantastic turn out today.

“It’s been great to see so many children doing all sorts of sports.

“It’s also lovely to see so many people enjoying using the park.

“I’ve spoken to a few families who said they didn’t realise how lovely it is and will have to come back more often, which is great to hear.”
